My color pencil technique grew
out of my work in pastels, and
people often think at first sight
that these are pastels. I use the
side of the lead much more than
the point. I rarely use white or
black, and am more interested in heightened color than in accurate values. I always look for a sense
of motion and life, atmosphere
and weight. Drawing for me is a
process of finding shapes of light
and dark, warm and cool, and the
angles between points in space.
When I focus truly on those things,
forgetting who or what I am
drawing, things like likeness and
character come through of their
own accord. Drawing is the best
meditation I have found.

These drawings were done from
life, in Open Sketch sessions at
The Drawing Studio, where I monitor
the Sunday morning session.
